Poll Results for Popular Home Features Gas vs. Electric
A majority of Americans, 60%, prefer homes with all or mostly electric appliances, assuming equal cost and features. This includes 31% who prefer a completely electric home and an additional 29% who favor mostly electric with a gas stove for cooking. Conversely, about 21% of Americans prefer homes powered mostly or entirely by fossil fuels like natural gas, propane, or oil. The remaining 19% have no preference or are undecided.
These preferences show some variation across different groups. For instance, Democrats tend to prefer electric appliances more than Republicans, and Black respondents show a stronger preference for all or mostly electric homes compared to White and Hispanic/Latino respondents.
Urban residents also show a slightly higher preference for electric homes than rural residents.
Deck vs. Patio
The preference between decks and patios varies depending on the region. A 2012 survey found that patios are favored in the West and South, while decks are more popular in the Northeast. Specifically, the West South Central region (including Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas) showed a strong preference for patios (73%) over decks (4%). In contrast, New England (including Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island) showed a preference for decks (72%) over patios (22%).
This division has remained relatively stable since 2009. In terms of new home construction in 2019, only 20.3% of single-family homes included decks, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Construction. Decks were most commonly found in New England (63%), followed by the West North Central region (43%), East South Central region (42%), and Middle Atlantic (39%).
Deck vs. Patio: ROI
A recent analysis by Remodeling Magazine found that patios return approximately 50% of their cost, while decks return closer to 60-75%, according to Finetco. The National Association of REALTORS® similarly found that concrete paver patios tend to return around 70%, and wooden decks closer to 80%. Composite decks offer a 66% return on investment compared to 55% for a patio, according to Bankrate.
It is important to note that these comparisons are not always equal and depend on factors like the sophistication of the deck or patio and the materials used. Maintenance costs also play a significant role in determining the long-term ROI.
